Beauty in suburbia

Looking through the photographs from New York last week, I was reminded of the statues of Cupid and Psyche in Malvern.

Psyche and Cupid face off

I have admired these statues for years now – I especially like the strength in them and the art deco lines on Pschye’s body.

My delicious Chinese New Year 2010

I need to take a break from all the feasting after this hectic 2 weeks of eating and drinking. It all started a couple of weeks before Chinese New Year where we spent my weekends making pineapple tarts, cashew nut cookies and kuih bangkit. And I made heart-shaped ones because the first day of Chinese New Year falls on Valentine's Day as well. So more love around for everyone! A small group of us decided to celebrate both eve and first day of Chinese New Year together. And our place were opened to them. On the eve, we opted to have ... read more

Tuscan Eggs @ Picnic, Toorak Road

Having spent months delaying to go to Picnic, I finally made it there in one piece and with a hungry tummy. The place wasn't as packed as I thought it would be on a Sunday morning, since this is the day when people brunch out, prams and jogging pants in full swing. Fortunately, I had a seat and it's nice too. Firstly, I have to say that I loved Picnic as soon as I walked in--red striped sofas, bottles and bottles of wine and champagne displayed on top of the counter, mirrors with the specials written on it, huge colorful ... read more

Jewellery at auction

There’s a jewellery auction happening in Malvern on Monday… I like looking through these types of catalogues, and favourites from this one include:

lapis lazuli bracelet [here] a very interesting coral brooch [here] jet and gold brooch [here] citrine drop pendant (well the stone, not so much the setting) [here] and I’m always attracted to onyx plaque rings [here] a fabulous pale green amethyst [here] the most horrid however is this ‘extremely unusual diamond ring’! They were swimming around in circles as if they were searching for something, but they were on opposite sides of Morell Bridge and weren't getting any closer to each other.  Swans mate for life and there are several pairs that call this part of the Yarra home.

Outpost by St Ali. Overall Score 15.92

33 Yarra St, South Yarra 3141 Coffee Brand St Ali Outpost has a lot going for it, the modern look, cool name and an indoor space that’s as though you walked into mama’s kitchen. We feel there were some concerning issues here though, with staff knowledge and communication, you never know what you are going to get service-wise. [...]

RMIT Fashion Student #2: Georgia Head

The work of RMIT University Fashion Design student Georgia Head is currently on show at the salon.

What you see here are images of Georgia preparing the installation piece.

The creation of this piece was inspired by summer in the city.

We asked Georgia to put together a few words about herself. What stood out for us was her definition of a garment: “the narrower ... read more
